"Três Ficções"
Three Fictions
“Três Ficções” is a collection of three short stories by Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges, considered by critics as one of the masterpieces of Latin American literature of the 20th century. In this project, my aim was to paginate this work completely, from the cover to the body of the book.
Throughout the work, I followed a warm and light color palette, in pastel shades. The cover is minimal, simply adorned by a labyrinth, a recurring element in all of the author's short stories. Since it is the common point between the three tales, I found it to be the best solution to illustrate the work. The back cover shows the summary and fragmentary elements of the main labyrinth, while the spine shows only an ellipsis. Since it was too thin to put type on it, the choice of the three dots was made in order to refer to its title, and to the spirit of the publication.
Inside, I chose to use colored pages to distinguish the three stories. This way, we can see their separation simply by looking at the fore-edge of the book, before opening it. We observe there a transition from pink to orange to yellow.
The text is in a darker version of the color of the page, totally excluding black ink from this book.
This project was made as part of the Design Studies class of the 4th year of the Faculty of Fine Arts of The University of Porto’s Communication Design degree.
